Nishmat - The Jerusalem Center for Advanced Jewish Study for Women

Ma'ayan

Nishmat's Ma'ayan Program combines Torah learning with a second chance at high school matriculation and a better future for young women of Ethiopian origin. Each student receives a full tuition-and-dormitory scholarship as well as a living stipend.

Most remedial programs aimed at Ethiopian youngsters reinforce their isolation from the Israeli mainstream. Nishmat's Ma'ayan students are mainstreamed into Nishmat's Judaic studies classes with college-bound Israelis from top academic backgrounds. They live together in Nishmat's dorms with Israeli and overseas students who serve as role models religiously, academically, and professionally. Our Hand-in-Hand program pairs Nishmat's overseas English-speakers with Ma'ayan students: English-speakers tutor the Ethiopians in English, the Ethiopians speak Hebrew with the English-speakers. The Hand-in-Hand program gives the Ma'ayan students to the opportunity to take their place as contributors to Nishmat community.

Nishmat's warm embrace of its Ma'ayan students continues long after completion of the program. Alumnae return to Nishmat for frequent Shabbatot and programs, and regularly attend shiurim in teachers' homes. Nishmat maintains a Ma'ayan Assistance Fund to help alumnae who marry to set up their homes, to help with dental care, and to provide emergency assistance.
